CASTELLO DEGLI ALBERI

10 Bedrooms  |  20 Sleeps  |  Maremma & Argentario
About Villa

Magnificent medieval residence Castello degli Alberi overlooks an olive grove and is conveniently close to numerous historically and artistically significant Tuscan villages and cities. It is located directly across the island of Elba. Complete privacy is guaranteed by its gardens. Its décor, furniture, and construction date back to the noble Tuscan style of the late 16th century.

Through the double glass doors at the end of the entry hall, you can enter the back garden of the Castello, which features a well-kept lawn and rose garden with cozy outdoor lounges. It's a great spot to enjoy a refreshing beverage before dinner or on hot summer evenings. There is a patio to the right where people may simply eat breakfast, dinner, or even lunch on those first nice spring days. The patio has chairs, tables, and canvas umbrellas.
The pool, which is accessible from mid-May through the end of September, is located at the end of the garden and is gated off. The pool is surrounded by old pine trees that provide shade during the sweltering summer months and looks out over a split-level olive grove. A lovely "fit space" with a few machines and a year-round "Jacuzzi" pool are also available. There are restrooms and a changing area in this area as well.

There are two floors in the design of the Castello del Granduca. A grand entrance hall with oil paintings and a substantial hardwood table from the 18th century is located on the ground floor.

Upon arrival, there's a little sitting area to the left of the entry hall with an old wooden desk, a bookcase, and ADSL Internet access. At the end of the entry hall, to the left, is a second sitting room with a bar in the corner and a fireplace.
From there, we can enter a small, cozy living room that is tastefully decorated with an antique chest, two extremely comfortable lounges covered in a rich damask fabric, a satellite television, and a VCR, CD, and DVD player. There is a brightly lit eating area with ceramic tiles on the right side of the entry hall where visitors can have their breakfast buffet and, if they'd like, lunch and dinner. Access to the kitchen and a much smaller, more private dining area are located at the end of this dining area.

Two staircases lead up to the first floor. A gorgeous suite with a sizable terrace can be found at the bottom of the first stairway (Suite 7). Its interior design is mostly green. Next to this suite are two double bedrooms (Rooms 5 & 6) as well as Suite 4. This wing of the castle has a junior suite (Room 11) and access to the tower as well.

By descending this staircase, one may reach the mezzanine level, which contains a junior suite (Room 8), a second double bedroom (Room 9), and a staircase leading to an attic that also has a junior suite (Suite 10). This room boasts a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside and exposed wood beams. Located to the right of the entry hall, the grand staircase is outfitted with two vintage suits of armor. It leads to Suite 3, the grand duke's enormous bedroom. Painted in cardinal red, this apartment has views of the front and rear gardens. It also has ancient furniture, such as a grand piano, bookcases, and a bed head from the 17th century.
Two additional apartments (apartments 1 & 2), one of which has a view of the northern garden and the other of the southern garden, are accessible via this second stairway.

Air conditioning, a minibar, a personal safe, color satellite TV, a phone with a separate external line and modem access, a radio, and a personal alarm clock are features found in every bedroom. Each hand-painted travertine marble bathroom has a hairdryer and a complete set of bath towels.

In the Area

At short distance from the house is Volterra, one of Tuscany's most picturesque hilltop villages. Even with its wealth of attractions, Volterra is less visited by visitors than other Tuscan towns, so even when you explore its ancient ruins, you'll likely be sharing its winding stone alleyways with locals. Encircled by medieval walls, Volterra is an Etruscan settlement with an impressive historic core that includes fascinating Roman ruins, medieval buildings, and alabaster workshops.

San Gimignano, one of Italy's best-preserved medieval villages, is only a few kilometers from the property. San Gimignano appears to be a town straight out of a Renaissance painting from a distance. It is composed of lofty stone towers enclosed by a ring of walls dating back to the 13th century. It is instantly visible because of its towers, but the artwork held within its walls is equally amazing. Despite its small size, the town boasts plenty of superb restaurants, art, and architecture to keep you busy for days.

An hour's drive will also take you to the conveniently accessible ancient town of Siena. Because of its storied red brick structures, the main square Piazza del Campo, which has a scallop form, and the Cathedral Square, which is dominated by the zebra-striped Duomo, Tuscany is a must-see destination for tourists. With its amazing art collections and secular monuments that have managed to retain their medieval designs, Siena is effectively an outdoor museum glorifying the Gothic style. There is much to wonder at.
